Spar Kaiserbroodje — the Kaiser roll (Kaisersemmel), a classic Central European round roll with a characteristic five-section star pattern on the top surface created by folding the dough before baking. One of the most recognisable bread roll formats in the Netherlands and across Europe.
What is a Kaiser Roll?
The Kaisersemmel (Emperor's roll) originated in the Austro-Hungarian baking tradition and spread throughout Central and Western Europe. The five-part top pattern is the identifying feature, created by folding five overlapping sections of dough in sequence before the final proof. During baking, the sections expand and create the raised petal pattern, and the exposed sections receive extra Maillard browning for a more complex crust flavour.
