The Kersenvlaai is one of the most classic and beloved of all vlaai varieties — the deep colour and sweet-sour intensity of cherries on a soft yeast base is the vlaai you'll find at every Limburg family Sunday.
About the Vlaai
The vlaai is the traditional pie of the Dutch province of Limburg — a yeast-leavened base (not a shortcrust pastry) that is softer, more bread-like, and sweeter than a French tarte or a British pie. It is baked in a flat, wide tin and is the centrepiece of family occasions in the Limburg tradition, served in slices with coffee or as a celebration dessert.
