The Monchoutaart vlaai — a Dutch cream cheese (fromage frais) filling on a yeast base, named for the Monchou brand soft cheese that defines this style. Creamy, tangy, and lighter than a baked cheesecake.
About the Vlaai
The vlaai is the traditional pie of the Dutch province of Limburg — a yeast-leavened base (not a shortcrust pastry) that is softer, more bread-like, and sweeter than a French tarte or a British pie. It is baked in a flat, wide tin and is the centrepiece of family occasions in the Limburg tradition, served in slices with coffee or as a celebration dessert.

Wheat flour, sugar, Monchou cream cheese (fresh fromage frais), butter, eggs, sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, gelatine, yeast, salt. Contains gluten, milk, eggs.
Serving
Serve at room temperature. Cut into wedges. Best enjoyed with a cup of filter coffee or a glass of milk. For the authentic Limburg experience, serve alongside a second variety to offer guests a choice — the vlaai is traditionally served in pairs at celebrations.
